Hi there
When people often ask me, what is the most profound strategy that you have applied in your practice to achieve better results for your patients with a tendon injury, I always say the power of understanding the secret to preventing and improving tendon adhesions through the use of the CMMS technique.
I am privileged and honoured to be hosting this webinar with Dr Donald Lalonde. I first met Dr Lalonde at the 10th Annual Hand Surgery Symposium Philadelphia, Pensylvania, 2008 and again at the 12th Triennial Congress of the IFSSH & 9th Triennial Congress of the IFSHT, New Delhi, India, March 2013. I suggested to Dr Lalonde that he comes to South Africa and in February 2019 he presented the WALANT technique at the SASSH Refresher Congress. Soon after this congress, Dr Chetan Patel, co-founder of Hand Consult SA began using the technique in his practice, which enabled me to change my management of tendon injuries following repair.
Dr Lalonde is a phenomenal Hand Surgeon who has dedicated his career to solving the problem of the high cost to patients who need to have surgery through developing the WALANT technique. He is also passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills with Therapists and Surgeons through presentations, publications and through personally connecting and communicating with them on social media profiles. His humble approach to his colleagues has subsequently impacted the lives of many patients.

DR DONALD H LALONDE, MD, BSC,MSC,FRCSC
- Professor of Surgery at Dalhousie University, Saint John Canada.
- Current ASSH Council Outreach and International Relations Director.
- Current President of the Canadian Society for Surgery of the Hand.
- Past Chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgery
- Past President of the American Association for Hand surgery
- Past President of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons
- Honorary member of the American Society of Hand Therapy
He is also the co-founder of WALANT surgery. Dr Lalonde has provided visiting Professorships to 58 institutions, including the Kleinert Institute.
He has been an Invited Visiting Professor more than 35 times to various Plastic and Orthopedic surgery training programs in Canada and the United States and has been invited to present more than 200 International presentations with many being the keynote speaker.
Dr Lalonde has peer-reviewed more than 100 journal publications and has published 30 book chapters.
He is the Continuing Medical Education/Maintenance of Certification section editor for the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery since 2007. He has referenced over 150 journal articles.
He is the editor of the Wide Awake Hand Surgery book Thieme Pub New York 2016.
Dr Lalonde received the Golden Apple Award from Health Volunteers Overseas for developing a reverse fellowship in Kumasi, Ghana.
Dr Lalonde's four main areas of research include:
1) Wide awake reconstructive surgery
2) Minimal pain injection of local anesthesia to avoid the need for operative sedation
3) Pain guided hand therapy
4) Evidence based operative sterility
Robyn Midgley
Robyn obtained her BSc (Hons) degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of the Witwatersrand and obtained both her British and European certifications in Hand Therapy.
Robyn worked at the prestigious Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust for 8 years where she treated orthopaedic and plastic surgery patients with traumatic and elective hand and upper limb injuries. Following on from this role, Robyn went on to pioneer the extended Scope Practitioners (ESP) role thereby enabling her to perform advanced clinical assessments, order specialist investigations such as MRI and CT scans, initiate treatment and take first line consent for surgery.
Robyn returned to South Africa to establish Hand Therapy Consulting in 2011. Robyn has developed credible relationships with hand surgeons where collaborative treatment plans are developed based on her trusted advice and expert opinion. She has published numerous articles in reputable Hand Therapy journals and has presented at several international conferences. She has also co-authored the Chapter on the Therapists management of the Stiff Hand in the 7th Edition of the Rehabilitation of the Hand & Upper Extremity textbook.
In 2017 Robyn established Hand Consult SA with Dr Chetan Patel, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, a collaborative service based in Johannesburg, Gauteng that provides specialist assessment, treatment & rehabilitation services addressing conditions, injuries and diseases of the hand and upper extremity.
In 2019 Robyn launched the first-of-it’s kind online CMMS course that consists of over 24 hours of theoretical and practical learning to qualify hand therapists to apply the CMMS technique. Robyn’s vision is to heal stiff hands across the globe through teaching and working with hand therapists.
Robyn’s practice, Hand Therapy Consulting is based in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The practice provides a sophisticated and calm environment that is conducive to healing. Sound clinical knowledge, advanced assessment skills coupled with innovative technology are used to meet the needs of patients and develop bespoke treatment plans that ensure maximum healing and avoid re-injury in the future.
