Hi there

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a difficult diagnosis to treat, leaving many therapists unaware of how to accurately differentiate between the stiff hand and CRPS and how to treat the patient if they do present with true CRPS. Very often, these patients present late to hand therapists for treatment and present with secondary complications that make the rehabilitation process even more challenging. Having a sound understanding of the complexities of the presentation of CRPS is paramount to applying the correct techniques and achieving a successful outcome. These injuries are best managed in the acute stage following an injury and we need to be able to address problems as they arise. This webinar will enable you to learn new skills which you can implement to take your practice to new heights and achieve better results for your patients.

I am privileged and honoured to have two exceptional guest speakers, Dr Chetan Patel, Plastic & reconstructive Surgeon who is an enormous fan of the CMMS technique, and Shrikant Chinchalkar share their expert knowledge and expertise in this subject.

Dr Chetan Patel

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Micro Surgeon, Hand Surgeon.

Chetan obtained his Fellowship in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery from the College of Surgeons of South Africa in 2009 (FC Plast Surg SA).

His undergraduate studies were completed at WITS University (Johannesburg) in 2000 and all his surgical training prior to registrarship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was done at the hospitals on the WITS Academic circuit. Chetan acquired his Masters in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in May 2013. Chetan's interest in hand surgery has developed over the last 8 years. He has a significant experience in trauma hand surgery both from accidents and work related hand injuries. Subsequently Chetan has spent time with Dr Roger Nicholson, increasing his experience in elective hand surgery, gaining valuable insight into nerve compression syndromes, congenital hand problems and arthritis related hand conditions.

Robyn Midgley

Robyn obtained her BSc (Hons) degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of the Witwatersrand and obtained both her British and European certifications in Hand Therapy.

Robyn worked at the prestigious Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London and th returned to South Africa to establish Hand Therapy Consulting in 2011. She has published numerous articles in reputable Hand Therapy journals and has presented at several international conferences. She has also co-authored the Chapter on the Therapists management of the Stiff Hand in the 7^th Edition of the Rehabilitation of the Hand & Upper Extremity textbook. In 2017 Robyn established Hand Consult SA with Dr Chetan Patel. In 2019 Robyn launched the first-of-it’s kind online CMMS course and in 2022 she launched the Surgery & Therapy Summit.

Robyn’s practice, Hand Therapy Consulting is based in Johannesburg.

Shrikant Chinchalkar

Occupational Therapist, Certified Hand Therapist, and President of Advanced Clinical Education Inc. Canada.

Shrikant J. Chinchalkar worked as a hand therapist at the Roth-McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Centre in London, Ontario, Canada for 26 years. He has over 47 years of clinical experience in treating upper extremity conditions, over 36 years of teaching and 30 years of research experience.

He designed and developed Hand Therapy programs at four major teaching centers in Canada including Roth-McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre in London, Ontario. In addition, he designed WSIB Specialty, Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injury, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Rehabilitation programs in the country. He started Hand Therapy Fellowship programs at Roth-McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre. He worked as a guest lecturer at University of Manitoba, University of Toronto and Western University in Canada.

Over the years he conducted many instructional courses on upper extremity rehabilitation in over 25 countries in the world and has won many awards for his presentations. He has over 300 presentations to his credit. He was awarded the “Dr. Paul Brand Award of Excellence” by the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), “Award of Leadership” by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), “Award of Excellence” by the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Hospital, “Best Educator” by the Western University, “Most Outstanding Prestigious Alumni” by the Nagpur University in India, the “Lifetime Membership Award” by the Canadian Society of Hand Therapists (CSHT) and recently “Excellence in Teaching and Coaching” by the administration of the St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2017.

In 2017, the Hand Therapy fellowship program was named after him. It is now called as “Chinchalkar Hand Therapy Fellowship Program” at the Roth-McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Center.

Recently, the International Federation of Societies of Hand Therapists (IFSHT) in Berlin presented him with a “Life Time Achievement Award” on June 18^th, 2019. He authored five book chapters and has published 32 papers and 15 abstracts in numerous peer-reviewed journals related to Upper Extremity Surgery and Therapy.

Kristine Beacham

Director of Perth Hand Clinic, Senior Occupational Therapist and Accredited Hand Therapist.

Kristine has an undergraduate degree in Education with a BA from Curtin University in 1996 and she obtained her Masters Degree with a split between Sydney University, New York University, and Curtin University to ensure a diversity of experience and knowledge. She has been working as a hand therapist since 2008, working with some of the world’s most respected hand surgeons, and she has been treating patients in the private sector throughout Perth and the South west Region of Western Australia for the last 15 years.

Kris has also presented at state and national conferences on a variety of hand related topics including radial nerve palsy, radial head fractures, traumatic hand injuries, TFCC post operative splinting and rehabilitation, PIPJ injuries, and treatment of the stiff hand.
Kris has coordinated student education at state universities for over 10 years, has worked closely with surgeons on research of outcomes following total and partial wrist fusions, and ligament repairs of the wrist.
Her practice is co-owned and run with her esteemed colleague, Sarah Fairthorne, in Perth, Western Australia.
